THE FIVE POINT NATIONAL PROGRAM
HEER plus Arts and Humanities
In 1972, the Continental Societies initiated its national program “Operation Awareness: HEER” (Health, Education, Employment, Recreation). Each segment of the program was chosen because of its significance in the lives of all young people, and the necessity to enhance activities and projects in these areas for children with special needs.
HEALTH:
Is the key factor to quality life.
EDUCATION:
Is essential if youths are to be able to function in the society in which they live.
EMPLOYMENT:
Introducing young people to and training them for the world of work is a top priority if youths are to become economically independent.
RECREATION:
The fourth dimension is an essential part of the lifestyle of each individual, relaxing mind and body as he/she works to fulfill his/her goals.
In 1977, the fifth dimension - ARTS and HUMANITIES - was added to provide cultural enrichment. Thus began the Continental Societies Five Point Programmatic Thrust.
Each chapter surveys, investigates and reports the needs of children and youth in their province. Using guidelines developed by the National Vice President who is chairperson of the HEER Program, the local chapters implement programs, projects and activities in these five areas to meet the needs of the young people in their communities.
In addition, members of the Societies volunteer their time and services by partnering with established organizations and programs in their communities which emphasize these goals.
Continental Societies, Inc. mandates three programs for national participation: Asthma Awareness, Childhood Obesity and Literacy. Each chapter is required to create an activity which brings information to the community.
